I know we still have around the old Iodine, but while in the local Walgreens tonight just after work, an older gentleman was looking for something. When he asked me we both looked for it but it was not on the shelf anywhere and no spot for it either. Now when he asked the sales person if it was in another section, she looked at him very, very puzzled and said, and I quote here "sorry sir, I've never ever heard of it before!" Now I'm not THAT old, and he wasn't much older but we turned more...

OK, so here I know there is still the Iodine as I said, but does anyone remember Mercurochrome???? Both he and I knew what it was, and yet no one else there did. The young lady told the gentleman to ask the pharmacists if she knew what it was.....OMG OMG
There was something on the shelf with the last part of the wording being 'cure' or was it cura...something along those lines, but she couldn't even tell him if that was replacing our old Mercurochrome. She was just totally befuddled about what he was asking for.
DO ANY OF YOU REMEMBER IT???? I know I DO and there was always a little bottle of that, the iodine, peroxide and alcohol in the medicine cabinet. ALWAYS..... less...
oooh ooohhh OOOHHHH YES!!! I DO remember that Ungunentine Ointment as well. OMG OMG what memories!!! LMAO OH and also too, my Aunt used to keep in her cabinet something in a small 'tin' called "Black Salve"....and it was BLACK GUNK but I can't begin to tell you how well it 'always' worked!!!!! Had no idea, still don't to this day what it was made of, but OMFG, it worked. Smelled like SHIT/CRAP and was thick as gooooooo but it worked.
It was just too funny and I thought now wait just a darned minute here, I AM NOT THAT OLD. YEP I too remember the sting on my boo-boos as well....But for the most part, those were all we had in the cabinet and I dreaded seeing 'em being pulled out...OMG,....TOO FUNNY!
I was a clumbsy tom-boyish kinda kid. I was forever scraping my knees and elbows, and always had some sorta cut somewhere on my body. My Mother literally dumped the methiol more...

I was a clumbsy tom-boyish kinda kid. I was forever scraping my knees and elbows, and always had some sorta cut somewhere on my body. My Mother literally dumped the methiolate on all my injuries. I was one big pink/red stained mess! My Father used to call me the Scar tissue kid. Ahhhhh! The childhood memories. Does anyone remember Ungunentine Ointment? Nasty smelling medicinal mentholated goop in a big yellowish tin can. That was my Gramma's end all cure all. less...
Bran, back in 1998 the US FDA decided that Mercurochrome was " not gennerally recognized as safe and effective" as an over the counter antiseptic and stopped it's sale across state lines. Note those last three words. Mercurochrome as you may have guessed is made of primarily Mercury which in large enough doses causes damage to the brain similar to the symptoms exhibited by the bk admins. hehe While there are only a few medical reports of mercury toxicity from the use of the antiseptic more...

Mercurochrome as you may have guessed is made of primarily Mercury which in large enough doses causes damage to the brain similar to the symptoms exhibited by the bk admins. hehe While there are only a few medical reports of mercury toxicity from the use of the antiseptic you know how the government is. More than 30 yrs after first finding out about mercury poisoning, mercury accumulation in fish remains the primary source of exposure to this toxic metal. So pregnant women, women who may become pregnant, nursing mothers, and small children should avoid shark, swordfish, king mackeral, canned tuna, shrimp salmon etc.
So Bran you see two things here. If you fit into this group of people don't eat fish or use Mercurochrome. If you're like me just say F_ _ K it and enjoy your life. Second after looking at some of the brain-damaged decisions that get made in this country, ya can't help but think somebody's mom ate way too much fish and washed it down with Mercurochrome .Whewww i'll think I'll go lay down and take a nap. less...

Oh yeah! I remember it! That stinky pink/red stuff in a little brown bottle that burned the hell outta my boo boos when I was a kid... methiolate! It's still around. Like Cin says, it's more apt to be found in quaint old smaller pharmacies. It can also be mixed/prepped by a pharmacist as a special order. Some old school MD's will order it for a patient from time to time.
SEE I "KNEW" I WASN'T QUITE THAT OLD>....LOL's LMAO
THANK YOU CINN, its funny though, Bless his heart, when she said that about the Mom an Pop stores (as I was walking away) he was almost like a little bit offended....giggles....he was not rude or anything, just like humpf....ppfftt......he was kinda cute about it though. I also do remember the Methiolate it just hadn't crossed my brain last night as I wrote that.
But I do remember clearly those little bottles being in the medicin more...

But I do remember clearly those little bottles being in the medicine cabinet, not a whole lot of anything else. Those were our staples for bangs, bruises, cuts, scraps......hehehehe

I sales rep for the nation's largest OTC drug distributor part time (now you know what I do when I'm not building stuff), and I am familiar with any and every OTC item that can be had in America.
Mercurochrome, and Methiolate as well, do still exist, they just don't fit in the sales figures for a lot of the big drug chains or big box retailers to carry anymore.

Anytime you need something like that, try your local independent pharmacy. These mom and pop pharmacies are a great source of items you just don't see in the mass retailers. They will also bend over backwards to get in something you want.
I sell a lot of both products to the mom and pop places along with other things most chains don't carry anymore such as SSS Tonic, Grandpa's Pine Tar Soap, etc. less...
